Before I got dairy goats I assumed you could milk any female animal that had a baby. Which is sort of true - except I didn’t know that some animals only produce a little milk while others produce a lot, and some have major attitudes and don’t want to be milked at all! Our first goat, Heidi, was on our property when we bought it so she became our goat. I figured, let’s breed her and get milk! That’s how we got Peter. Heidi is not a dairy goat, and so I quickly learned that it was not worth the time and energy to milk her and get 3 ounces. Sundae, the goat in this video, is a mini Nubian, which is a dairy breed. At her peak she gives about 40 ounces of milk per day. However she likes to take PTO days unannounced and runs from the milking stand, forcing me to chase her down, put on the halter, and walk her back to work. I have learned my lesson about dairy animals. If you’re new to this, get one who has done the milking routine MANY times. Think “Ole Bessie.” She doesn’t have to be personable, she just has to behave. Our little Nigerian dwarf, Lucy, is exactly that. She doesn’t want hugs or scratches, she just wants to be left alone, but she jumps on the stand and does her job like clockwork.

Our efforts to stop a cell tower from going up next to our farm have given me quite the education in how our county works. We are at the epicenter of development with highways and strip malls and housing developments at every turn. It has been mind-boggling to see how the “process” works when citizens challenge their government - now as one of those citizens and not a TV reporter filing a story about it all. To say the “game is rigged” does not seem to encapsulate how it all works. I used to tell people that if you’re exhausted by national politics - get involved locally where you can make a difference. Now I’m not so sure.

“Big Cell Phone” or as I call it, the Cellular Industrial Complex, will have its day of reckoning in the not too distant future. I try to keep mine 6-ft away when not in use and turn it on airplane mode at night (while also keeping it in another room). Remember friends, there was a point in time where none of us had cell phones and we survived. I recognize that our society is stacked around it all now, but you can still take a break.
